Do you need to go to school for writing to become an Author?
Hey Writing Roomies... Today's writer question is.....
Do you need to go to school to become a writer?
The answer to that question depends on you. If writing is your passion outside of books and you'd like to explore different lanes of writing such as journalism, creative writing or one day becoming an English Professor. By all means, enroll in College for writing or take up some courses to sharpen your skills; depending on the writing avenue you choose...
Do you need to have a special degree to become an Author? The answer to that is a solid NO! I know tons of Authors personally, (including myself *wink*) that didn't go to school to become a writer, some Authors don't have degrees at all, but still managed to achieve Best Selling success! In fact, I have an Associates Degree in Science and truth be told, ya' girl wasn't even thinking about becoming a writer when I was in College. As explained in my new book, "Write That Book And Make That Money" I talk about how some writers are great writers and others are great storytellers. I like to think of myself as both but moreso the latter. Eventually, you'll find which type of writer you are and that will be your strength.
Authors that are great storytellers usually have more longevity in the industry because their creativity is endless. But that doesn't mean that they are the greatest writers, that just means that their story is compelling and that they've managed to write their way into your heart. I've read some manuscripts that were submitted to my company that I knew that with the right editor, the story would be magical. However, the Author's writing skills may not have been up to par but I'd still consider signing them because I could see their vision. Always keep in mind, writers can always be groomed to become better Authors. Besides, we have this great component in publishing called "editors" that can help with your grammar and sharpen your writing style. Editors give great notes, they critique your work, check your tenses, your grammar and even fact check some of your information. So don't worry about being the greatest writer. Trust the process and write your book! If you have a legit story, with the right editor, they can help you tell your story exactly how you envision it. So take out that laptop and write a few hundred words tonight and hold yourself to it!
I'm excited for your journey!
Let's get it!
